IMANI ARCHER SURREAL

As the daughter of the phenomenal artist D’Angelo, Imani Archer carries a profound musical legacy- one built on soul, truth, and vulnerability. Yet with 'Surreal' she firmly establishes her own voice; tender, introspective, and deeply moving. The release arrives at a devastatingly poignant time. Surreal was written in July but only released now, just a week after the devastating loss of her father to cancer. That loss gives the song an even heavier weight, turning it into both a tribute and a testament to strength: “Over a month ago, I submitted this song I wrote in July not knowing that a week before its release, I would unexpectedly lose my dad to cancer,” Imani shared. “Ironically, my life feels exactly like the title and lyrics of this song... surreal.” Despite this tragic timing, she chose to release it, explaining, “My Dad wouldn’t want me to pause. He was always so proud of my singing and my music. I hope you’re proud of me up in Heaven, Daddy.” From the very first notes, the strings open like a sigh: soft, emotional, and hauntingly beautiful. The melody is stunning, while Imani’s voice feels almost angelic, fragile yet powerful in its honesty. Lyrically, 'Surreal' captures the ache of losing a love that feels too good to be true. Lines like 'shadows in the corner of my room, nothin’ I wanted more than all of you' paints a vivid image of love and loss that blur the lines between dream and reality. A beautiful beginning from an artist carrying forward her father’s spirit while stepping into her own light. -Rachel Fryer
